The Provost’s Walk
Distance: 4 miles/6.5km Approximate Time: 60 minutes Height Gain: negligible Further Info: `Walks South Perthshire` Hallewell Pocket Walking Guide available from Perthshire TICs.
A peaceful and level circuit on the edge of the town centre, affording views of surrounding countryside and hills. The route is divided into several `mini sections` with colourful names including Oak Walk, Shepherd’s Wynd and Beggarmuir Road. Western Road Park (on the western edge of the town) has a map board outlining the route and is the most sensible place to begin the loop.
The Frandy Reservoirs
Distance: 5 miles/10km Approximate Time: 120 minutes Height Gain: 110 metres Further Info: `Walks South Perthshire` Hallewell Pocket Walking Guide available from Perthshire TICs or OS Landranger Map 58.
At the heart of Glen Devon lie two manmade lochs known as The Frandy Reservoirs. These were constructed by German prisoners of war during the First World War to supply water to the towns of Dunfermline and Rosyth. There are several walking options near the lochs using the private `Water Board` road which meanders up to both reservoirs, the views of nearby hills improving steadily with the ascent. Walkers can return by the same route or, for a more strenuous option, strike out onto the open hill towards the heart of the Ochils range. Begin at a point just off the A823 Glen Devon to Gleneagles Road. Cars can be parked with consideration off the road at GR 949 053. Refreshments available in Glendevon village.
