Driving in Edinburgh and Scotland.

Once you have collected your hire car from Edinburgh Airport you will be ready for your expedition to Edinburgh or even further a-field. Many people also come to Edinburgh for Business purpose. Whatever your reason you may some of the following advice helpful.

Driving Regulations
For those of you that have never been to the UK before the biggest thing to remember is that cars are right hand drive and cars drive on the left. Once you have got used the controls on the other side you will have to familiarise yourselves with the road systems and regulations.

Most of the road signs are self-explanatory and many will be familiar as there is an almost worldwide standard signage. Remember though that all the speed signs will be in Miles Per Hour (MPH) not Kilometres. Roughly speaking 10 miles equals 6 kilometres so remember not to speed or go too slowly! Roundabouts are also tricky to negotiate for the uninitiated. You have to give way to traffic on the roundabout coming from the right. In theory this works well, but The UK has a multitude of 'mini-roundabouts' which can present problems in themselves as it not always obvious whom has the right of way and occasionally a stalemate can happen - if in doubt wait.

Traffic lights abound in the UK and regulate the traffic flows efficiently in most cases. The sequence is the same as most countries in the world so they shouldn't present too much of a problem. If you have a hire car in Edinburgh you will doubtless come across many traffic lights.

In the UK there is an abundance of 'speed cameras' positioned on the roadside to catch motorists speeding. Initially introduced as a deterrent against speeding many people now see them as a revenue generator. If you drive past a camera faster then than the speed limit then the camera will take a picture of you and measure the speed you were travelling. The fine will eventually find its way to the driver - so beware. There are lots of signs warning of speed cameras but more signs than cameras. Some cameras don't have film in them. By law the cameras cant be hidden and must be in view. The roads also have small lines painted on them which can alert you to the cameras. In Edinburgh there are many speed cameras

In Edinburgh the main roads in the city have 'green lanes' or bus lanes. Edinburgh wants to lessen car usuage and pollution and therefore is trying to make bus journeys easier. The green lanes in Edinburgh are for buses and taxis only during peak hours and if you use them, even a rental car from Edinburgh Airport

If you are touring in Scotland, we suggest you choose a vehcile with a relatively big engine and plenty of space! The highland roads can be quite steep and our unpredictable weather can mean that the boot is full of waterproofs! For groups of people travelling by road in Scotland, minibus hire is the way forward - you can transport fifteen to seventeen people, includung the driver in one vehicle. Minibus are available from Edinburgh Airport and from a downtown rental office. Small groups of Golfers on holiday in Scotland take a look at the Volkswagen Caravelles, the long wheel base version has lots of boot space for your clubs.

Should you require help in making a reservation, our dedicated trained staff are ready to help you.

Edinburgh is excellent for shopping, send flowers Edinburgh.
